Can you share a brief overview of your artistic journey, from when you first started pursuing your creative career to where you are now?

Started at high school and sadly ended there too as was told not good enough to continue… Some 20 years later I did an art course, then another, then another and today I am a part-time artist.

What inspired you to become an artist, and how did you decide to pursue it as a career?

Don’t think I was inspired, more a natural sense for me.

How do you balance your creative pursuits with the practical aspects of being an artist, such as marketing, networking, and financial management?

I work full time in paid employment, so there is very little time to create and do the practical tasks.. things get missed or not given the full attention they need.. Almost wish I could pay someone to do it.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative person?

Finishing something that you love, are pleased with

What keeps you motivated and passionate about your art?

Just the love of painting, the doing.. I also love the social side of making arty friends

What advice would you give to young artists who are just starting out and considering a creative career?

Believe in yourself, not everyone is going to love your work and that’s ok.

How important is it for artists to find their unique style or voice?

Very important… otherwise you get compared to and that isn’t healthy

How did you discover and develop your own artistic identity?

Took awhile… few knocks along the way, but it kinda happened when I found certain materials

Can you talk about the role of failure and perseverance in the life of an artist?

It can be tough and so disheartening, especially when rejected, but try and get feedback where ever possible… and turn that feedback into learnings that work for you.. Remember not all feedback is right

What are some misconceptions or myths about being an artist that you would like to debunk?

We can do anything from landscapes to portraits to photo realism

How do you navigate the art industry and find opportunities to showcase your work or collaborate with others?

Networking with other artists is a must.. that’s how you learn what events/galleries are the best.. then apply

What are some common challenges artists face in terms of recognition and financial stability, and how can they be addressed?

Galleries taking such high commissions… 50% is tough cos then they earn more that you when you include materials, framing, courier etc.

Social media mainly.

I wish someone would tell me

How do you approach self-criticism and growth as an artist?

Very tough on myself, imposer syndrome happens here..

Have you ever experienced creative blocks or periods of low inspiration? If so, how did you overcome them?

Yes, but generally an event looming will kick me back into gear

Do you believe it’s necessary to have a degree in art to succeed?

Hell no
